Introduction: What is a Color Theory?

A color theory is a way to arrange colors in such a way that they are pleasing or harmonious, or at least not jarring. In this blog post, we are going to answer the question: “What is a Color Theory?”.
Colors have power. They evoke an emotional response based on what a particular culture associates with that color. Some cultures associate red with happiness and white with death, for example. But every culture has its own associations for every color in the rainbow, so it would be impossible to list them all here.
A color theory is a way to organize colors by their visual effects on the human eye. The most important of these effects is the harmonies that arise between colors.

A Brief History of the Change from White to Black in Cars

The first cars were single-seaters. They were made of rubber, or of leather, or steel, or some combination of materials. They looked something like a horse-drawn carriage with a front wheel and seat for the driver. They were considered marvels of engineering, and in some circles they were so fast they were classified as “cars.”
In 1910, a car called the Benz Patent Motor Car went into production, and soon there were more than 1 million cars on the road in America. There was a shortage of black paint, however. The only paints available were white or eggshell or light grays – “passing” colors that would blend with snow and pale blue skies.
Many car owners ignored this problem by placing black cloths over every window, fender, and door. Sometimes these “black out” treatments were made from used tire inner tubes.
In the mid-1920s, manufacturers started to make cars where they could paint them any color they wanted. At first they chose brown, tan, or beige. Then they tried black or silver. But nobody thought that black cars would sell in large numbers. Americans were accustomed to white cars, and black was for rich people who were also racists.

The Myth of the “Black Car” and the Car’s Color Timing

In 1898, the “Black Car” myth begins. There were two black cars in New York City at the time. One was owned by a wholesale grocer, John Healy, and the other by a Manhattan banker, Alfred Winship. Both men approached Henry Ford about making them into cars for sale to the public. Ford ordered more than he could manufacutre; he ordered more than anyone else wanted as well. He could not sell the cars, so he lost most of his money. The myth begins.

At that time, Model T’s sold for $825 and were not cheap enough to be a poor man’s car. The average weekly pay for blue collar workers at the time was about $16, which meant the average worker would work 52 weeks to buy a car. Yet the myth that Henry Ford could not sell cars because he refused to make any other color than black persisted.
“To this day,” says William Stout, author of “The Henry Ford: A Biography,” “the myth persists.”
He is not surprised, however. Mr. Stout says that most people who do not remember Henry Ford’s car business are surprised to learn that Ford’s cars sold for $125 a piece, even at the turn of the century.

Why Are Some Colors So Hated?

Black is a color of authority, the color of finality. It is severe in nature, swift and severe in movement. Black is not warm or comforting. Black does not offer shelter and tends to prevent other colors from showing. Black absorbs more heat than it reflects, which makes it appear heavy and drab. Black, like all colors, has emotional associations and symbols. Black is associated with loss and death.
Blue is a color of peace and calm. Blue may suggest a carefully planned future or a well-designed landscape. Blue is also the color of royalty, which symbolizes peace and stability. In Chinese philosophy, blue symbolizes the vitality needed to live without fear.
Red is the color of intensity. Red is visible in many parts of the sky at night, which makes it associated with danger and excitement. The color red arouses passion, rage and aggression. In ancient Rome, red was associated with strength, but this association eventually became a symbol of weakness and shame.
Yellow is cheerful, upbeat and optimistic. Yellow exudes a sunny disposition that creates a sense of warmth and safety. Yellow is also associated with money and gold, which are associated with status in society. In China, yellow symbolizes the sun and represents the natural world. The color yellow also evokes the positive emotions of happiness, fun, joy and pleasure.
Purple is beautiful and elegant. Purple symbolizes royalty in many cultures, which implies prestige and power. Purple reminds us of otherness or mystery because it is rare, mysterious and out of place. In ancient Rome, purple was associated with wealth because of its rarity.
