The Life of a Girl in a Gang

Young women have always been at risk for violence and oppression in society, but the increased prevalence of gangs and gang violence has made a more dangerous environment for girls than ever before. Gang members often prey on young females in low-income communities because they are easier to intimidate, manipulate, and control. Gang life is seductive to young women in low-income communities, because it offers a sense of power and status that they are not receiving at home or school. Because gang members offer financial and social support, young women often view joining a gang as a way out of the desolate lifestyle they experience every day. Gang life seems exciting, glamorous, and full of promise to a girl who is facing a bleak future.
Young girls often join gangs because they are searching for something meaningful and important in life. They have few social opportunities with their friends primarily because the majority of them do not attend school or work outside the home. Therefore, their daily lives are pretty mundane. Gangs offer an opportunity for these girls to find adventure, excitement, and an all-important sense of belonging. Gangs are also a safe haven for these girls when they are feeling vulnerable and scared at home or school. Young women who join gangs do not need to be sexually active. It is important to note that girls who join gangs because of sexual exploitation often leave the gang before they turn 18 years old, but that is not the case with all girls in gangs.
