Introduction: What is the Meaning of Color?

Van Gogh uses the virtue of color to show life. He saw color as a force that could reflect and express emotions, as well as enforce one’s will upon society (Markun). According to Van Gogh color is a means of expressing and enforcing one’s will. Color can be powerful and expressive, and in some cases it could be assertive. When used correctly it can reflect different moods or emotions as well
Van Gogh saw nature with a heightened intensity, his use of color was so intense, he applied paint thickly with vibrating brushstrokes.

What are the Different Meanings of Colors and How Does that Impact our Emotions?

In Van Gogh’s works there is a unique way of using color that is different from the way other artists do. For example, in his paintings of his “The Crows,” there are instances when he uses blue to represent death and sadness. This proves that he uses color to signify emotions. Also the portraits of Van Gogh himself are primarily in reds and blues, which signifies power and control over others. In his letter, to Theo he also talks about how he sees the emotions that each color represents.
Although many people have developed their own interpretations of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and what they mean, there is no one set interpretation of his works. Through this short paper, I will be discussing the different meanings that color has within Van Gogh’s paintings. This can be seen in the description of his “The Crows” as well as his portrait of himself.
The letter to Theo is written in French, which can make it harder to understand than it should be. What I will be doing is translating it and also explaining the different meanings of his sentences.
A couple of words that should be defined are “Aspect” and “Appeal”. Aspect means to look at something from a certain direction. Appeal means to attract someone with the way that something looks. These two words can be applied to Van Gogh’s paintings as Van Gogh always chose the most appealing colors for his pictures.

How does the Power of Colors Influence Us?

The color of the sky, grass and trees has the ability to produce one’s emotion. The color of a person in the picture can create an emotional mood. This is a quality that Van Gogh explores in his artwork and expresses in his letter to Theo. Van Gogh is able to connect color and emotions because he has an eye for the colors and knows what they mean. Through his art, written words and letters, he is able to express his feelings about emotions and the influence of colors on daily life.
When Van Gogh writes to Theo about the use of color which he has in mind for his future paintings, the artist states that he has a definite goal. He wants to expose the influence of nature by using the vivid colors from sunflowers and other flowers in combination with different tones to express emotions. Van Gogh recognizes the power of colors, and what they can do for people.
