Perspective is the angle or point of view from which you view something. Our experiences, our ability to interpret what we see and what we think of it, are all dependent on our point of view. If we change our point of view, the way we interpret things changes as well.
Every single day we view things and events not through one single perspective, but through a multitude of perspectives. People perceive things differently, and people have different points of view.
You may be able to see the same thing as someone else, but your interpretation of it will be very different depending on where you are standing, how you are feeling and what is going on in your life at that time. Perspective is a state of mind or a changeable subjective viewpoint from which we observe and draw conclusions about the world.
Objective reality does not change when we change our perspective, but we do see the world differently. Our feelings and emotions do have an impact on what we see, feel and experience. Our perspective is a real filter that affects how we see things.
Why Vision Is Not the Most Important Sense in Life
Only half the population can see just out of the corners of their eyes. A few people only have one functioning eye left. Some with normal vision have all kinds of eye condition that makes it difficult for them to see clearly. So, why do people take their vision for granted? Why do we consider it the most important sense in life? The answer is not as obvious as you might think.
Vision is one of the five basic senses that all human beings have. Vision allows us to see what is around us and read, among many other functions. When we use our eyes, light gets into our eyes and triggers a chemical reaction in the retina at the back of our eye; this is called photochemical reaction, which transforms this light energy into nerve signals processed by the brain. Modern technology has made the process more complex, but that is all that we need to know. The brain processes this information and responds to it. Therefore, vision is the primary sense and everything else is secondary.
How to Develop Perspective through Meditation & Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment, with a compassionate, nonjudgmental attitude towards the current experience. It allows you to see things as they are, without dividing them into categories or judging them. The more you practice mindfulness, the more your perspective becomes clear. MEDITATION: The act of meditating helps you relax and focus on one thing at a time. It can be helpful when dealing with anxiety, stress, or another emotion. Meditation helps you connect with yourself and gives you a better understanding of your perspective.
You can start practicing mindfulness by focusing on the present moment and doing simple things such as sitting, walking, eating or brushing your teeth. This can be done seated in a chair or standing, with your eyes closed or open.
Meditation doesn’t always need to be done sitting down. Try meditating while you’re on an escalator, walking down a sidewalk or busily working out at the gym. Even watching a movie during your lunch break can help you focus on the present moment without getting distracted by other thoughts and ideas.
The more you practice mindfulness, the more you will be able to see things for what they really are instead of constantly being a slave to how you think they should be. You’ll begin to realize that there is no “right” answer or way of doing things. Everyone’s perspective is unique and should be respected. You can use mindfulness to see the world in a different way — one that isn’t influenced by past experiences.
What is the Relationship between Perspective and Empathy?
Empathy is the ability to recognize and experience the world from another person or creature’s perspective. If you can’t get inside other people’s heads, how are you supposed to identify with them? Empathy allows us to see things from many different points of view. It is a powerful tool for connecting with others and understanding their perspectives. Empathy is central to every aspect of human life. It is also a tremendous challenge.
