Introduction: Why is the Emotional Impact of Dogs so Important to Their Human Partners?

Dogs have evolved alongside humans, so they know what makes us human. Dogs have specific needs to help them survive and thrive, and we have developed special adaptations to accommodate their needs and to make an emotional connection. These adaptations are vital to dog ownership and we may not be aware of them until they’re missing. What could we do without our dogs?
Gwen Bailey, Author of ” It’s a Dog’s Life But It’s Your Carpet”: * Dogs have the ability to love unconditionally. So when your dog is alongside you, loving you right back, it fills your heart with joy and happiness. They greet us at the door when we come home. They take care of us when we are ill, grieving or feeling lonely. They look for us when we are gone. They provide comfort and companionship during times of stress, anxiety and worry. Dogs give you a reason to live, every moment of every day, even on your worst days. When we lose our dogs, it means losing the best love there is.

Part 1 – The Impact on Coping Strategies

A dog without a human to care for them and the human’s need to express their love, care and compassion would not survive long. It is not just what we do for our dogs, it is how we do it. There are many needed and expected daily activities to help your dog. These can include making sure they have access to clean food and water, exercise, physical contact and companionship.
Noticing the high number of dogs being abandoned, it is now considered a crime to abandon your dog. This impacts the mental health of both humans and dogs as they know that someone loves them already. This can mean the difference between life and death. Coping strategies are needed immediately, to filter out the noise that some people show for the love they have for their dog.
The Dog Training Institute (DTI) has found that “ if your dog is dependent on you, you will feel sad when he is not there, lonely when he is away from you but happy when he is around”. It is not just the lack of human love, it can be any lack of human care, such as their favourite meal or pictures of you. The dog may become depressed and are more prone to anxiety.

Part 2 – The Impact on Coping Strategies

Dogs have several ways to communicate their emotions. Coping strategies are improved when a dog’s emotions are recognised and understood by the human partner. Neither one is at their best when the other does not know what the dog needs. Emotions need to be expressed, like hugging, kissing and cuddling. This is good for both humans and dogs. It is important to monitor whether an emotion expressed by the dog is calming or upsetting the human partner. In moments when the dog is feeling upset, use a calming word (for example: “it is okay”). It will help the dog to express their emotions in a more positive way.
“His left ear rose up like a question mark.”
When a dog looks as if they are asking for something, it indicates that they need something from you. But you may also be asking for something from them. When a dog appears to shiver, it is often an expression of anger. A constant whimpering is often a sign that the dog is not well.
“He pushed [the ball] into my hand.”
Dogs may push whatever they are holding into you, if they want to take it away from you. For example: “He pushed his lead into my hands.” Dogs who like to drop their toys and run away with them, usually do so in order to have fun with their human partners. “He dropped his toy into my hands.” Only when the dog is not playing any more, may you leave it in their possession.
