Introduction: What is the difference between ordinary and extraordinary?

Sometime in my travels around the globe and through different societies, I came across a humbling confession, many times over. I was traveling through a Chinese village when one old woman approached me with tears of gratitude in her eyes. She told me she was from a small village nearby and had been born and raised there her whole life. Her parents were farmers who had never traveled or seen any city or met anybody from outside their mountain community before she came to see them years ago for the first time. When she arrived, the village was primitive and the people were poor. The only way she could communicate with them was by pointing her right thumb in a downward direction and then pointing to her mouth and then to her left eye. Every now and then she would arrive with a bag of rice, seeds or vegetables to exchange for food they had grown themselves. It wasn’t much but it allowed them to survive as they planted their meager crops.
Until, that is, the day she came to see them. That day changed her life forever. There was a visitor from the city who was very impressed with their village and its population. This man wanted to buy all the land in the village and turn it into a city so he could build factories and houses and sell his product there. As part of his plan he bought her parents’ land for a very cheap price. Then he traded them a few bags of rice and seeds for the lot.

How to Add “That Little Extra” to Your Life

They had a lot of old buildings that were in terrible disrepair and lots of space that was unused. A few years earlier they had decided to rebuild the village by clearing away all the poor housing and families that were living in destitute conditions. Their intention was to build a proper community with new homes for everyone. They built schools, a schoolhouse, a church, government offices and other buildings.
They had to hire someone to oversee the project and make sure it all got done. They asked me if I’d be willing to spend some time helping with this project. I agreed, but told them that my schedule was pretty tight and I only had a limited amount of time available.
We had been there for about a year before they started building the houses. Construction started and the first house was built in about six months. They built this house to show what the other houses would look like.

The Difference Between Ordinary and Extraordinary is the Quality of Work

The church had a steeple that stood high above the other buildings. The old woman said she had never seen anything as wonderful as that steeple, and when she looked at it, it seemed to her like God was looking down on them with His blessing. When the church was finished, they celebrated and invited their Chinese neighbors to come and enjoy the celebration in their new church. They did a lot of the work free of charge but there were builders who had charged them for materials, equipment and their time. This was why they were able to pay all the builders and workers who had contributed. The Chinese people were delighted to come and see the church and they were impressed by its beauty. On rainy days, it seemed even more beautiful because of all the pews that were being used. Many people came to visit during the week after God had blessed them with good weather. The sisters, who had lived in a small house, could not believe what they saw when they got out of their car. They looked up at the steeple, which was high above them. They had never seen anything so wonderful . . . . they had never seen anything so beautiful in their lives. The sisters could see God’s hand everywhere.

Why ‘That Little Extra’ Makes a Huge Difference in Life

The old woman said her father told her that the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is a little bit extra. It makes all the difference. He said it was a matter of perspective. He was able to see their hard work pay off and their family rewarded for it. When she saw what they had achieved, she wept with joy. “Our lives have changed from poor to prosperous” she said. “We didn’t know we had so much potential. We were just ordinary people”.
Then the old man spoke. “It all happened because of that little extra, my dear” he said. “That extra little bit at the end made all the difference, and has set our family on a path to prosperity”. He had been able to see their hard work rewarded and the family rewarded for it. And he saw it happen in his own living room seeing his own children rewarded.
“To be extraordinary, you have to be willing to give a little extra. It has to come out of you. The only way it can be extraordinary is if it comes from within” he said. “That little extra is what takes us from ordinary to extraordinary”.

What makes an ordinary day extraordinary?

She told me she had come to the old village many times after that. She always brought some special gift as a thank you gift and a token of gratitude for their hard work. When I asked her why she came back she said it was because they had made her feel so welcome. They had shown her nothing but kindness and appreciation for her gifts. She said that she always returned to share the news about how their village is now prospering with new buildings, new school, new homes and a thriving town.
They also told her that they had saved some of the money she gave them toward building a new police station to keep them more secure. They said that they were very happy that the president was once again paying regular visits to their village and someone always seemed to be there to clean up the town and make it look beautiful.
In fact, after she had been there for a couple of weeks, she noticed that some of the women had started wearing their best clothes on Monday’s. They would bring out their most beautiful dresses for President Ompong’s visits. She said the women were so proud of their new police station and how it had made them safe and secure.
