Introduction: What is living in fear?

Fear is an emotion providing motivation and caution. It’s an internal alarm that springs into action when you sense a threat. Fear is a natural way of warning you so that you can protect yourself against what might hurt you, it tells you to avoid or escape a threatening situation, and warns of possible dangers in the future. Fear makes you aware of potential danger and spurs you to take action to keep you safe.
Fear is a warning, not a command. Fear can be helpful when it’s based on facts and protects you from actual dangers. When fear is out of proportion to the situation or unrealistic, it can keep you from taking action that might help you in the long run, because fear tells you to avoid any situation where there might be danger. This kind of fear can keep you from doing something useful or even necessary for your life. When we allow fear to immobilize us and overwhelm us, it prevents us from acting in ways that could give us a better life. The most serious kind of fear is the kind that keeps a person stuck as an ineffective victim.

The Value of Courage vs Fear

Experience has taught us that there are good things in life and bad things in life. Bad things such as disease, poverty, and accidents not only cause pain to us but also cause us plenty of trouble. These bad things will eventually kill you, they might already have done so, and they might be happening right now. But then there are other bad things in life such as wars, murders, terrorism, rape and etc. Which are like the bad things that kill you, but they do not kill you. They leave scars in your life and they make it hard for you to go on living. These kind of bad things, although will give you all kinds of suffering, does not make it impossible for you to live on. You can still live a normal life today as we all do.
But what about good things then? Can we say that good things are just as important as bad things or do they even matter in our lives? Or does one automatically negate the other? Good and bad, there is no way to tell which of them is more important. But it is true that all these good and bad things happen in life, so together they form a balanced world. A world where both positive and negative are equally important. Something like Yin Yang, one cannot exist without the other. So to say they are equal would not be far from the truth. Even so, one can be more important than the other in certain situations.

How do we take back our lives from a life lived in fear?

The first step is to learn how to control your fear in order to make you stop living in fear and start living with a life of courage. When one becomes aware of their fear, it will naturally start to fade away. It’s really important that you deal with your fears in order to be able to lead a life of courage and happiness. If you don’t do anything, the fear will get stronger and stronger until it completely takes over your life. So, it’s really important that you take action and deal with your fears.
When one is confronted with a dangerous situation, their mind will automatically sense danger and tell the body to release hormones that initiate a ‘fight or flight’ response. The release of adrenalin (epinephrine) causes a number of physical and mental changes. These changes allow the person to deal with the dangerous situation by either fighting or fleeing from it.
Non-dangerous situations cause the opposite responses. In ‘fight or flight’ situations, the hormone secretion is triggered by the thought of danger. In non-dangerous situations, the hormones are triggered by a thought of fear, which comes from the body when it perceives a threat.
