Introduction: Why Play Chess with Friends?

It’s not because chess is a difficult game. Although it can be if you apply yourself, the game is straightforward enough that even a child could win with just some basic knowledge. Sure, there are plenty of people who will never master chess at an expert level, but for many of us, playing the game purely for fun is all that matters. In fact, some of the most amusing stories that you will hear about chess have nothing to do with strategy or outcome, but simply about the fun and excitement of playing with friends.
But the point isn’t to believe any of that nonsense. The important thing to note is that the “philosophy” behind most chess stories involves bragging rights. You might have heard that playing chess with friends is even more fun than playing against each other, and I’m sure you’ve seen some people get into arguments over who played better that day in order to gain the bragging rights. These types of stories are just a facade without substance behind them.

Different Benefits of the Game

Chess is a game of wit and can be a game of deception. This is why it’s also a perfect game to play in the dark. Sure, it might be slightly more difficult then normal, but it can still be played as if you were playing in the light with your eyes closed. It’ll be harder to see, but you’ll get used to it. This can be a great way to challenge yourself mentally, by using your other senses, your hearing and touch, more than usual. It’s also a good way to show that you can still beat someone even when they’re not looking at the board.

The Psychology Behind the Game

The fact that you are thinking so hard about your next move and your opponent is doing the same, means that both of you are subconsciously using body language and a range of other psychological clues to figure out what your opponent is going to do. This makes it completely pointless to try and read their mind. Even the best chess players are still going to have some kind of idea of what they think your opponent might do, but it’s just not possible to be any more sure.
You could say that you are trying to communicate with your opponent using your body language, but this is really just another kind of mind reading. What you are doing when you make a move is following the swing in their body language, which you have identified somehow, which shows that they think they can win.
You have been watching their reactions and their past history and have managed to get a feel for what they are thinking, so you have an idea of what they might do next.

How to Play Chess Like a Pro

Playing a game of chess is all about timing. Whether you sit down to play with your friends, or if you’re in a tournament, the same basic rules apply: you need to make your move quickly enough that it stays relevant, but not so quickly that you don’t take adequate time to think about it. (Sometimes getting the timing right means you’re so slow you give up all your advantage and never get any further.) The best way to learn how to play chess is to play a lot. In this article I’m going to tell you how. I’m also going to tell you what some of the right moves are in chess, so you can see for yourself how much fun this game is.
The most important thing about playing chess is understanding the board. Once you understand how the pieces move from where they are on the board, and where they can move to next, it becomes clear what your choices are at any given moment. Having an idea of where your pieces are on the board means that you can identify strategic possibilities and plan ahead. But when you think of them as being on the board, they can be a bit abstract.
But if you have an idea of what the pieces look like and where they are, and if you know that your opponent is playing more or less the same way, you can make predictions:
“The king will never move, because my bishop is guarding it.”
