The Last Kids on Earth: The Documentary began as a short film written and directed by Kennan Cook. Since then, Cook has produced a few short films with his brother and together we’ve been working on the idea of making a feature-length documentary about the siblings ever since.
Now, with help from Kickstarter and the amazing crew, cast and family that has joined us on this mission, we’re in pre-production to begin filming “The Last Kids on Earth” feature film.
How to Find the Last Children on Earth and Produce an Awesome Documentary
First things first: find your characters! Find out who they are and what they like to do. If you want to make a documentary, your characters need to be interesting enough for people to want to follow them. This can be an issue when you don’t have a lot of time to film. Find a way to make your characters interesting without spending days or weeks on production where they don’t have anything to say.
Here’s an idea: grab a bunch of cameras and hire a bunch of kids and follow them around with all the cameras as they talk about their lives. You can give your characters the task of finding out what happened to everyone else on earth or you can make them your focus.
It’s best to go with a younger audience for your documentary. This is because it’s been shown that older people are less likely to engage since they don’t have a lot of time for shows or movies about other people. If you want to make a documentary about the doomsday race, go ahead and make it based on the last children on earth and their search for the last survivor.
