Introduction

The only thing I miss about living in my hometown is the lack of traffic. Living on a busy street has spoiled me. It’s not that I can’t drive on a country road safely, it’s just been so long since I have, and living here has made me soft.
Today I drove to South Carolina for a car buying appointment with a car dealership I have purchased from in the past. I was tempted to do this on a Friday, but it was close enough to the weekend (being Saturday), so I decided that it would be best to wait until the weekend. It ended up not being necessary. I was on the highway within five minutes of my appointment time and a little less than one hour after I left Chicago. It was so smooth, I felt guilty. I turned off the radio and listened to nothing but the sounds of the motor and wind in my ears for about fifty minutes.

Driving in the city is difficult. The roads are congested, pedestrians and cyclists are everywhere, and parking can be hard to find. It’s not just traffic that makes driving difficult–it also takes serious practice to navigate all the turns and maximize your speed while getting where you’re going on time. Many people feel this way about driving in Manhattan because of how dense it is, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Here are some tips straight out of an NYC driver’s mouth on how you can get around town by car more smoothly and easily.

A few days ago, I came across a major accident where five cars were in the road, two were flipped on their sides and one was in flames. There was a car parked on the sidewalk, and another crashed into the entrance of a store. It wasn’t my fault I was late to work that day–I knew I was running late since it was so packed and I had to fight my way into my job–but it still made me jump. When I got to work, I asked how everyone else’s morning went, and all I heard were complaints about how crowded the city was. Today, when you’re driving in the city, you know exactly what you’re talking about.
