Introduction: Why “You are always loved” is a Necessary Story and How it is Disrupting the Status Quo

In an interview with NBC News, Michael Sam said that he was “not looking to be a pioneer. I’m just doing what I love: playing football.” Michael Sam, a defensive end for the St. Louis Rams, became the first openly gay player in NFL history when he came out following his senior season at Missouri. The 24 year old’s announcement sparked national conversations about homophobia and discrimination against homosexual individuals of all ages. I am the first to admit that the response to Michael Sam’s announcement was definitely progressive for the majority of media outlets, especially for sports networks. However, I am also certain that in response to his announcement, many children will hear people say homophobic things about Michael Sam. The power of “You Are Always Loved” is that it gives all kids a nonfiction ally who can empower them to claim their right to self-expression, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
In “You Are Always Loved,” Madeleine Dean, a twenty-year-old lesbian tomboy, “tries out” a new identity when she creates a cardboard cutout of herself as a superhero named “Lil’ Madeleine.” The character wears an “unfashionable” outfit with goggles that are reminiscent of her grandfather’s military camouflage uniform. When she comes out to her friends, Madeleine is supported and loved unconditionally. In response to the children’s questions about “Lil’ Madeleine,”Madeleine explains that Lil’ Madeleine is a way to express who she is while being true to herself.

What makes “You are always loved” such an amazing story?

Through “You Are Always Loved,” children are introduced to a nonfiction character who has overcome severe obstacles (which of course represent real life events), and the story shows their journey through real-life accomplishments and triumphs. “You Are Always Loved” is a book that clearly conveys the importance of not being afraid of one’s differences and how love can conquer anything. The story is set in the United States, where there are many stereotypes against individuals who are different than traditional ideals. The book is full of hope and determination to overcome the odds, and it inspires readers to believe in themselves and their dreams. The message that is embedded in “You Are Always Loved” is one of the most important messages to give children. As a teacher, I have seen my students scatter and become withdrawn because they feel like they don’t belong due to their differences. If all students believe that they are always loved no matter who they are or where they come from, the world would be a better place. Nobody should feel like they are alone, and that is exactly the message of “You Are Always Loved” for all children.

How does this story leave an impact on its readers?

By bringing to life a relatable character who has overcome obstacles and gone on to accomplish a lot, “You Are Always Loved” leaves a very powerful impression on its readers. In this story, children are introduced to Madeleine Dean, a young girl in the United States who is different from most people around her. Madeleine has an unusual personality and is bullied in school because she holds a different view that many think is abnormal. She deals with a lot of peer pressure and is slowly destroyed by other students who act cruel towards her for her actions. After being rejected by others, Madeleine’s story progresses and the reader learns how she went from the life of a victim to one of overcoming adversity through the power of love. After Madeleine’s parents decide to homeschool her, she is introduced to a compassionate teacher who teaches her about the power of love. This teacher helps her realize that everything is “an act of love” (Dean 3) and everyone acts cruel because they do not know how to show love. After this realization, Madeleine slowly becomes popular and well-liked by everyone in school, because she had learned the power of love. After reading this book, children can learn that just because someone is different it does not mean they are bad. This book gives hope to all the readers that they can overcome any obstacle and become successful and happy.

Is this story hopeful or pessimistic and why?

The message of “You Are Always Loved” is highly optimistic and hopeful. In the midst of rejection and pain, Madeleine believes in herself and never lets anyone or anything defeat her dreams. The message is also universal; it speaks to every child who has ever felt like no one understands them. It shows them that they do not have to suffer in silence and show that no matter how painful a story may be, there is always hope. The story teaches children to always believe in themselves and their dreams, no matter what they may be.
Although the story is written for children, it is unlikely that all adults will find the message to be so uplifting. Instead of being uplifting, it is probably more accurate to say that the message is depressing and dark. Though there are many positive elements in the story, it mainly focuses on Madeleine’s difficult childhood and her struggle to overcome her crippling anxiety. It is not a happy story, by any means. In fact, it is quite sad and bleak. This could leave adult readers feeling depressed and hopeless, because it makes one wonder what Madeleine’s life would have been like if she hadn’t been treated with such cruelty.
