1. Create the space to focus more deeply on what you want to achieve. Identify a specific outcome that you could get your eye on. And commit to focus on it for several months (just like training for a race) so that you can find the right balance of doing and succeeding (to reach your goals).
1. Stop giving up on your dreams and start doing them
There’s no sense in making a plan if you don’t have the follow-through to see it through. If you dream of being a millionaire, starting your own business, or living in another country…and then give up because it seems too hard. It will be hard, but if you do the work to reach your goal? Then in the end it will be worth it. Just take one step at a time. If you don’t make a plan for your life, other people will.
Is it easier to give up on your dreams or work for them? What stops you from making a plan? (Because without a plan – you’ll end up mediocre. Or worse – dead.)
We (I) have a friend who is the complete opposite of me. She wouldn’t dream of making a plan for her future. Why? “I just don’t know if I can do it” she says, “there’s so much to do!” And it all sounds daunting and overwhelming. But then, she just doesn’t get it. She has no idea what’s in store for her as far as life goes and that’s why she won’t start planning.
2. Stop looking at the way that life is happening to you and instead learn how to change it yourself
We all think life is happening to us, not actually taking control of our own destiny. Maybe you can’t walk through a room because it’s too small. Maybe you don’t like your job and don’t know how to get out of it. Maybe life is constantly getting in the way and stealing your dreams from you. If so…figure out how you can change it. You probably have more control than you think.
The first step to change is to figure out what you want. What do you want your life to look like. Do you want to finally finish that book you’ve been working on forever? Then start writing it. Do you want that promotion at work? Start looking for ways to get it. Do you want to finally move out of your parents house and get a place of your own? Start saving money every week and figure out how you’re going to make it happen. It’s all about taking action, doing something. Just don’t let your life continue to be something that happens TO you.
